EPF Nominee
Every salaried employee in India has an account with Employee Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Also, every EPF account holder must have a nominee for their EPF account. This will enable the nominee to withdraw from their EPF account in case any unforeseen event occurs with the account holder.
After adding the nominee, the member can update or change the nomination online. Earlier, to change the nomination, Form 2 was required, which the employer would send to EPFO. However, the process is now simplified, where the EPF Nominee update can happen online through the EPF members portal.

EPF Nomination Rules
The account holder can use the online portal to change, update or register the nominee anytime. The following are the rules for EPF nomination –
- It is mandatory to have a nominee for the EPF account as it becomes easy to transfer funds in a hassle-free manner in case of demise of the account holder.
- The account holder can opt for one or more than one nominee for their EPF account.
- In case of more than one nomination, the account holder needs to fix a proportion of share for each nominee. The nominee will receive the amount on a proportionate basis in case of the account holder’s death.
- The account holder shall nominate only a family member. Also, registering a non-family member is invalid.
- In case the holder does not have a family at the time of nomination, any close member can be a nominee. However, once they have a family member, the nomination must be in the family member’s name. In case the nominee is a minor, the guardian should be a family member.
- In case the holder makes any nominations before marriage, it is mandatory to file new nominations before marriage. This is because nominations before marriage become invalid.
- In the event of the demise of the account holder, the maturity amount under the EPF account is payable to the registered nominee. Furthermore, the payment shall be on a proportionate basis if any.
- If there is no nomination, the family members will receive the maturity amount equally. However, the amount distribution happens under specific terms and conditions.
Therefore, these nomination rules emphasize on registering a nominee in the EPF account. Failing to register the nominee on the EPF account may result in legal conflict among family members.
