The Government of India has made it mandatory for individuals to link their PAN card with Aadhaar card. The reason is that the income tax return cannot be processed if Aadhaar is not linked to PAN. Also, one cannot carry any banking transactions above Rs.50,000. Linking an individual’s PAN card with Aadhaar card is a very simple process. The government has provided various methods to do that. The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar card is 31st March 2021. 

Here, in this article, we will provide you with the various methods of how to link PAN card with Aadhaar card. 

Online Through e-filing website

The following is the step by step process for linking PAN with Aadhaar online –

  1. Visit the website.

  3. Incase only the date of birth is there in the Aadhaar card, then tick the square.

Offline through SMS

Individuals can also link their PAN and Aadhaar through the SMS facility. The Income Tax Department has urged the taxpayers to link their PAN with Aadhaar. One needs to send an SMS to 567678 or 56161 from their registered mobile number. They need to send the message in the following format –

UIDPAN<12 Digit Aadhaar> <10 Digit PAN>

Offline through form

Individuals can link their PAN and Aadhaar by visiting the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. They need to fill an Aadhaar Enrolment Form and submit a self-attested identity proof along with it. 

Importance of linking Aadhaar with PAN

Linking of Aadhaar with PAN is very important due to the following reasons –

  • If the PAN card is not linked with Aadhaar card, the PAN card will be deactivated after March 31st, 2021. The government has made it mandatory to link PAN with Aadhaar card. 
  • Linking PAN and Aadhaar card will help tackle the problem of multiple PAN cards issued in the same name.
  • The income tax return will not be processed if PAN is not linked with Aadhaar
  • Once done, individuals will receive summarised details of taxes levied on them for future reference.

Online linking of PAN with Aadhaar

One can link their PAN with Aadhaar by visiting the income tax e-filing portal. There are two ways of doing this process – 

  • By logging in to your account
  • Without logging in to your account

By logging in to your account

The following is the step by step process for linking PAN with Aadhaar through your account –

  1. Visit the website.

  1. Firstly, individuals need to register themselves if they have not registered on the e-filing portal.
  2. Login to the e-filing portal by entering the Login ID, password and date of birth.

  1. After logging in, a pop-up window will appear, prompting to link PAN card with Aadhaar card. If the pop-up window does not appear, go to the blue tab top bar and select ‘Profile Settings’ and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.

  1. Name, gender and date of birth will already appear as per the details submitted at the time of registration on the e-filing portal. Verify these details with the details on the Aadhaar card. 
  2. If the details match, then enter the Aadhaar card number and captcha code. Click on the “Link Aadhaar” button.

Without logging in to your account

The following is the step by step process without logging into the account – 

  1. Visit the Income Tax website.

  3. Incase only the date of birth is there in the Aadhaar card, then tick the square.

  6. Finally, click on the “Link Aadhaar” button.

In case of any minor name mismatch in Aadhaar name, Aadhaar OTP will be required. Hence, it is important to ensure that the date of birth and gender in PAN and Aadhaar are exactly the same. In rare cases, the name differs from PAN and Aadhaar card. Therefore, linking will be a failure. Also, the taxpayer will be prompted to change the name in either the Aadhaar card or PAN card. 

Linking of Aadhaar and PAN by submitting the offline form

The following are the steps of linking Aadhaar and PAN by submitting an offline form –

  1. Firstly, the individual has to physically visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.
  2. They need to carry a self-attested copy of identity proof along with them.
  3. Next, they need to fill the enrolment form.
  4. They need to submit the form along with the documents.
  5. Finally, they will receive a confirmation of linking PAN and Aadhaar.

Linking of PAN and Aadhaar through SMS

If an individual cannot link PAN and Aadhaar online, they can simply use the SMS facility. They can send the message to PAN service providers, i.e. NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited or UTI Infrastructure Technology And Services Limited (UTIITL).

The following are the steps of linking PAN and Aadhaar through the SMS facility –

  1. Individual needs to send a message either to 567678 or 56161 from their registered mobile number
  2. The message has to be in the following format.

UIDPAN<12 Digit Aadhaar> <10 Digit PAN>

For example: If the Aadhaar number is 222244443333 and PAN is ABCDE1234F. The message should be UIDPAN 222244443333 ABCDE1234F and sent to 567678 or 56161.

To check the status of the PAN link to Aadhaar, follow the below steps –

  1. Visit the e-filing income tax website

  3. After this, the status of PAN and Aadhaar will appear on the screen.

The Government of India has made it mandatory for all individuals to link PAN card with Aadhaar card before the deadline, i.e. 31st March 2021.   2. Select the category as ‘Individual.’ 
  3. Enter all the details as mentioned on the screen
  4. Make the payment and submit the form online after Aadhaar E-KYC.
  5. The updated PAN will be sent to the registered address.
  6. Once the new PAN card is received, they can link PAN with Aadhaar card.

Aadhaar wrongly spelt

In case the name is wrongly spelt in Aadhaar card, the following are the steps to make corrections – 

  1. Firstly, the individual has to visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.
  2. They need to fill the Aadhaar Enrolment Form.
  3. They need to submit the filled form along with a self-attested copy of identity proof (i.e. PAN card or Aadhaar card)
  4. After submission, the individual will receive an acknowledgement slip that contains the update request number.
  5. This URN can be used to check the status of the update request of Aadhaar.
  6. Once the update request is processed, the name is corrected. Subsequently, one can link their PAN with Aadhaar

The Government of India issues the Aadhaar card to every Indian citizen. The Aadhaar card has become one of the most important identity proofs. Recently, the government has made it mandatory to link the Aadhaar card with PAN. After this announcement, individuals initiated the process to link their Aadhaar card with PAN card. Hence, the government rolled out a process for linking PAN and Aadhaar with minimal effort, even in such cases. The following is the step by step process for linking PAN with Aadhaar in case of name mismatch –

  2. On the right-hand side, under the “How to?” tab, click on ‘Update PAN/Aadhaar Details.’

  2. Enter OTP and click on ‘Login.’

  2. Click on ‘Proceed’
  3. Post this, a URN (Unique Request Number) will be generated. 
  4. The user can check the Aadhaar update status. Post the update of name in Aadhaar, individuals can link their PAN with Aadhaar card. 

For Updating PAN card

  1. In case the user wants to update the PAN details, click on ‘Update PAN Details’

Thus, the following are the steps to rectify the name mismatch in PAN or Aadhaar card. Also, in case of major mismatch in PAN and Aadhaar card, the authorities will ask for biometric authentication of the individual. 

Exemption from Linking PAN with Aadhaar

The Government of India has made it mandatory for every individual to link PAN card with Aadhaar card. The last deadline for linking both is 31st March 2021. However, the government has exempted the following persons from linking PAN with Aadhaar – 

  • Non-Resident Indian (NRI), Person of Indian Origin Card (POI), Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI), etc., who are conducting businesses in India do not have to link their PAN and Aadhaar card.
  • Foreign nationals residing in India are exempted from mandatorily linking of their PAN and Aadhaar card.
  • People residing in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and Meghalaya are exempted from linking PAN with Aadhaar card.
  • People above the age of 80 years are also exempted from linking PAN with Aadhaar card.

Role of Correction Facility for linking PAN and Aadhaar

PAN and Aadhaar linking has been made mandatory by the Government of India. However, PAN and Aadhaar linking are successful only when all the details in both the documents match correctly. In case of any differences or errors in spelling mistakes in name or date of birth, the PAN cannot be linked to Aadhaar. One can make changes by visiting a nearby Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or the NSDL PAN portal. In case of any errors, the following are the steps for correction – 

  • Any user can correct their PAN details on the NSDL website
  • The NSDL portal allows users to apply for the correction of the name on their PAN.
  • They need to fill in all the details on the website and submit signed digital documents.
  • Once the details are verified and corrected in PAN, NSDL sends a confirmation email. Afterwards, the users can apply for linking PAN with Aadhaar card. 
  • If a correction has to be made to Aadhaar card, one can visit the UIDAI website
  • Firstly, enter the Aadhaar number and captcha code.
  • Request OTP, which will be sent to the registered mobile number
  • Incase only change in spelling of name, only OTP is required.
  • Incase modification is required for other details such as gender and date of birth; supporting documents are required for updating details.
  • Once the documents are approved, the user can link PAN with Aadhaar card.

Is it mandatory to create an income tax account before linking PAN with Aadhaar?

No, it is not necessary to create an income tax account. You can also link your PAN with Aadhaar without creating an account by directly clicking on the “Link Aadhaar” options under quick links on the e-filing income tax website.

Is it mandatory for NRIs to link PAN with Aadhaar?
