News Update
The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar card has been extended from 31st March 2022 to 31st March 2023. However, linking before 30th June 2022, you will have to pay a fine of INR 500. If you are linking on or after 1st July 2022, you will have to pay a fine of INR 1,000.
How to link Pan Card with Aadhaar Card?
One can link their PAN with Aadhaar by visiting the income tax e-filing portal. There are two ways of doing this process –

By logging in to your account
The following is the step by step process for linking PAN with Aadhaar through your account –
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax Website.
Step 2: Firstly, individuals need to register themselves if they have not registered on the e-filing portal.
Step 3: Login to the e-filing portal by entering the Login ID, password and date of birth.
Step 4: After logging in, a pop-up window will appear, prompting to link PAN card with Aadhaar card. If the pop-up window does not appear, go to the blue tab top bar and select ‘Profile Settings’ and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.
Step 5: Name, gender and date of birth will already appear as per the details submitted at the time of registration on the e-filing portal. Verify these details with the details on the Aadhaar card.
Step 6: If the details match, then enter the Aadhaar card number and captcha code. Click on the “Link Aadhaar” button.
A pop-up message will appear informing that PAN and Aadhaar linking completed successfully.
Without logging in to your account
The following is the step by step process without logging into the account –
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax website.
Step 2: Click on “Link Aadhaar” from the left side under quick links.
Enter the following details.
- Enter the PAN number and Aadhaar number
- Enter the name as mentioned in Aadhaar card
- Incase only the date of birth is there in the Aadhaar card, then tick the square.
- Tick ‘I agree to validate my Aadhaar details with UIDAI.’
- Enter theCaptcha Code’ as mentioned in the image for verification
- Finally, click on the “Link Aadhaar” button.
- A pop-up message will appear informing that PAN and Aadhaar linking completed successfully.
In case of any minor name mismatch in Aadhaar name, Aadhaar OTP will be required. Hence, it is important to ensure that the date of birth and gender in PAN and Aadhaar are exactly the same. In rare cases, the name differs from PAN and Aadhaar card. Therefore, linking will be a failure. Also, the taxpayer will be prompted to change the name in either the Aadhaar card or PAN card.

Linking of PAN and Aadhaar through SMS
If an individual cannot link PAN and Aadhaar online, they can simply use the SMS facility. They can send the message to PAN service providers, i.e. NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited or UTI Infrastructure Technology And Services Limited (UTIITL).
The following are the steps of linking PAN and Aadhaar through the SMS facility –
- Individual needs to send a message either to 567678 or 56161 from their registered mobile number
- The message has to be in the following format.
UIDPAN<12 Digit Aadhaar> <10 Digit PAN>
For example: If the Aadhaar number is 222244443333 and PAN is ABCDE1234F. The message should be UIDPAN 222244443333 ABCDE1234F and sent to 567678 or 56161.
Linking of Aadhaar and PAN by submitting the offline form
The following are the steps of linking Aadhaar and PAN by submitting an offline form –
- Firstly, the individual has to physically visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.
- They need to carry a self-attested copy of identity proof along with them.
- Next, they need to fill the enrolment form.
- They need to submit the form along with the documents.
- Finally, they will receive a confirmation of linking PAN and Aadhaar.
Importance of linking Aadhaar with PAN
Linking of Aadhaar with PAN is very important due to the following reasons –

The Government of India has made it mandatory for all individuals to link PAN card with Aadhaar card before the deadline, i.e. 31st March 2021. - Firstly, the individual has to visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.
- They need to fill the Aadhaar Enrolment Form.

- After submission, the individual will receive an acknowledgement slip that contains the update request number.

How to link PAN with Aadhaar in case of a name mismatch?
The Government of India issues the Aadhaar card to every Indian citizen. The Aadhaar card has become one of the most important identity proofs. Recently, the government has made it mandatory to link the Aadhaar card with PAN. After this announcement, individuals initiated the process to link their Aadhaar card with PAN card. However, there were small differences in the spellings of their name. This made it impossible for linkage. Hence, the government rolled out a process for linking PAN and Aadhaar with minimal effort, even in such cases. The following is the step by step process for linking PAN with Aadhaar in case of name mismatch –
- Visit the e-filing income tax website.
- On the right-hand side, under the “How to?” tab, click on ‘Update PAN/Aadhaar Details.’
- In case the user wants to update the Aadhaar details, click on ‘Update Aadhaar Details’
- It will redirect to the UIDAI website.
4. Click on Update Aadhaar Data
- Click on Proceed to Update Aadhaar
- Enter the Aadhaar number, captcha verification code and request OTP. OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number

- Post this, a URN (Unique Request Number) will be generated.

For Updating PAN card
- In case the user wants to update the PAN details, click on ‘Update PAN Details’
- It will redirect to the NSDL PAN website.
- Select the option ‘ ‘Changes or Correction in existing PAN data/Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in Existing PAN Data)’ from the drop-down menu of Application Type.
- Select the category as ‘Individual.’
- Enter all the details as mentioned on the screen

Thus, the following are the steps to rectify the name mismatch in PAN or Aadhaar card. Individuals can also update their PAN or Aadhaar card traditionally by visiting the Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or NSDL PAN Enrolment Centre. Exemption from Linking PAN with Aadhaar
The Government of India has made it mandatory for every individual to link PAN card with Aadhaar card. The last deadline for linking both is 31st March 2021. However, the government has exempted the following persons from linking PAN with Aadhaar –
- Non-Resident Indian (NRI), Person of Indian Origin Card (POI), Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI), etc., who are conducting businesses in India do not have to link their PAN and Aadhaar card.
- Foreign nationals residing in India are exempted from mandatorily linking of their PAN and Aadhaar card.
- People residing in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and Meghalaya are exempted from linking PAN with Aadhaar card.

One can make changes by visiting a nearby Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or the NSDL PAN portal. In case of any errors, the following are the steps for correction –
- Any user can correct their PAN details on the NSDL website.
- The NSDL portal allows users to apply for the correction of the name on their PAN.
- They need to fill in all the details on the website and submit signed digital documents.
