DSP mutual fund is a joint venture between a 150-year old Indian financial firm DSP and Blackrock, an American Investment firm. DSP group is one of the oldest and most reputed financial services firms in India, headed by Mr. Hemendra Kothari.
DSP started its business with stockbroking in 1860. The family set up The Native Share & Stock Brokers Association’, later renamed to ‘Bombay Stock Exchange.’ It was India’s first stock exchange. For the next 100 years, the firm was in the stockbroking business. In 1975, the 4th generation in the family, Mr. Hemendra Kothari, ventured into merchant (investment) banking and established the company DSP Financial Consultants Limited (DSPFC). In the next ten years, DSPFC tied up with Dresdner Bank, AG, Merrill Lynch, Banque Française du Commerce Extérieur (BFCE), and Swiss Bank Corporation to expand its business.
DSPFC became the reason for the Indian fund in the international market launched by Merrill Lynch. It also led to India’s first public issue of bonds for IDBI bank in the German Capital Market. It advised Merrill Lynch on the arrangement of a Revolving Underwriting facility and India’s first Euro-Commercial paper program for State Bank of India. The company was also involved in raising funds for ONGC in the Japanese market.
In 1996, DSP offered Merrill Lynch a 29.41% stake with scope to increase it to 40% for a banking partnership called DSP Merrill Lynch Ltd. (DSPML). In 1997 DSP Merrill Lynch Asset management launched its first domestic equity and its first domestic debt mutual fund schemes.
In 2006, BlackRock, a USA based multinational investment management firm founded in 1988, purchased Merrill Lynch’s investment management business (MLIM) around the world. It eventually led to the formation of DSP BlackRock Investment Managers in 2008.
In 2018, DSP purchased back its 40% share from DSP BlackRock Investment Managers. The company was renamed to DSP Investment Managers. Also, DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund was renamed to DSP Mutual Fund.
DSP Mutual Fund, a premier mutual fund in India, is present in 38 cities in India with lakhs of investors from all over the country. It has 34 open-ended mutual funds managing assets worth INR 77,212.54 crore (Dec-31-2019). They have successfully managed some of the best DSP BlackRock mutual fund schemes.
